About
Charlie Coe
Charlie is an interdisciplinary artist who has recently completed a BA in Fine Art at the University for the Creative Arts. Her most recent works focus on sculpture and photography with performance elements. Her current art practice focuses on her relationship with her body, ideas surrounding identity, and finding a lighter way to address more severe issues. Charlie is inspired by feminist artists who all approach their relationships with the female form in different ways but with the familiar current of a feminist viewpoint. It is interesting to address our unconscious bias about how we see ourselves and how others see us.
Charlie enjoys finding beauty in the broken and fun in the face of adversity. Looking at these subjects through the lens of her body has been significant because of the changes to her body caused by the treatment of breast cancer. Inevitably, her relationship with her body has evolved. She is interested in what is considered normal or beautiful and how we can frame things differently through cultural and historical differences. Charlie has previously explored the concept of organic entropy and the evolution of matter. By challenging the status quo through her art, she invites the audience to start a conversation about things they may not feel comfortable discussing.
Charlie encourages an element of voyeurism with her art, the idea that you want to look but don’t want to be seen looking. She openly invites her audience by permitting them to debunk preconceived notions they might have. She wants to openly address the elephant in the room to encourage open conversation and genuine curiosity. Through this conversation with the work and audience, she can create a subtle tension that keeps the audience coming back.
Charlie recognises that change can be challenging to accept but realising that it is an integral part of survival makes us unique and can only be a positive. Charlie's work, in summary, comes down to the ego and perspective.
